BANGKOK DANGEROUS (2008)
movie review by David Blackwell

99 minutes, Rated R
ASPECT RATIO: 1.85:1
STUDIO: Lionsgate/ Virtual Studios/ Saturn Films/ Blue Star Entertainment
Theatrical RELEASE DATE: 9-5-2008

STARRING Nicolas Cage
WRITTEN by Jason richman (screenplay),
based on the 1999 film written and directed by The Pang Brothers
DIRECTED by Oxide Pang Chun and Danny Pang

Some people will think BANGKOK DANGEROUS is a clunker. I think Nicolas Cage wanted to do an Asian action film. The pang Brothers wanted to break more into the US market by remaking their own 1999 film. Cage does sound like he is sleepwalking through the role, but Joe the hitman (who only goes after bad people and never gets close to anyone) is a guy who sleepwalks through life. He does the job and forms ano attachments. Joe think his three hit job in Thailand will be easy and he can finally quit. His life begins to get complicated when he decides to teach his errand boy Kang what he knows and he falls for a mute Thai girl. Joe's life starts to tumble from there as he begins to care for once.

The story of BANGKOK DANGEROUS has been seen many times in many other films. The big plus is the direction of The Pang brothers. Do I wish they had more of a hand in the characters in this new screenplay? yes. However, the script does get Thailand right. It is the same Thailand seen in many films made in thailand. BANGKOK DANGEROUS is a film I had low expectations going in. It was an OK way to spend 90 minutes and I hope Nicolas Cage does a really bang up action film next time. He needs a less predictable script to make him really stretch.
