HANCOCK
movie review by David Blackwell

92 minutes, rated PG-13
ASPECT RATIO: 2.35:1

STARRING Will Smith (Jon Hancock), Charlize Theron (Mary), Jason Bateman (Ray)
WRITTEN by Vincent Ngo and Vince Gilligan
DIRECTED by Peter Berg

STUDIO: Columbia Pictures/ Relativity Media/ Blue Light/ Forward Pass/ Overbrook Entertainment/ GH Three/ Weed Road Pictures
Theatrical RELEASE DATE: 7-2-2008

John Hancock (Will Smith) is a down-and-out superhero. He drinks and the public hates him. The police want to put him into jail. He saves a PR man (Bateman) from a train. The PR man wants to change Hancock and make the public love him. Hancock does go to jail and the cops want him to help with a bank robbery situation weeks later. Hancock's life takes a turn for the better until he discovers he isn't the only one. Soon after that turning point, HANCOCK become lame. It is like they didn't know how to write the last 30 minutes better. The films starts out with plenty of humor and promise only to end on a whimper. I wanted a stronger villain for Hancock to go up against instead of having it being an afterthought and just focus on the life that Hancock doesn't remember anymore. Will Smith is great in the role and yet I wish he would get them to write a better ending (the same thing that plagued the theatrical version of I AM LEGEND.

HANCOCK is a mild disappointment as audiences wait for stronger films (HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY and THE DARK KNIGHT). If they make a sequel to HANCOCK, please make sure he has a strong antagonist and a better ending.
