THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR
movie review by David Blackwell

STARRING Brandan Fraser, Maria Bello, Jet Li, Michelle Yoeh, John Hannah, Isabella Leong, and Luke Ford
WRITTEN by Alfred Gough and Mile Millar
DIRECTED by Rob Cohen

Theatrical RELEASE DATE: 8-1-2008

PLOT: Rick O'Connell's son, Alex (Luke Ford) finds the tomb of the Dragon Emperor (Jet Li). Rick (Bredan Fraser) and his wife Evelyn (Maria Bello replacing Rachel Weisz) are in a boring life of marriage after World War 2. Evie has turned her experiences in the first two films into best selling novels. Rick and Evie jump on the chance to go to Shanghai to return a priceless artifact to Shanghai. Soon the Dragon Emperor is awake and a race against is on to prevent Emperor Han from raising his army.

ANALYSIS:
THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR is an entertaining action-adventure film. It's better than the disappointing Indiana jones sequel. The film does feel a little short compared to the first two and the style of the film is different since Rob Cohen has taken over from Stephen Sommers (who directed the first two films).

It's interesting to see the film taking place in a different part fo the world comapred to the first two. The fights between Jet Li and Michelle Yoeh are one of the best things in the sequel. Still I wonder what would ahve happened if the sequel was in the hands of an Asian director. Then this film could go really wild. The Yeti do look a little too cartoonish. Alex O'Connell is a better son character than Mutt in the latest Indiana Jones. Plus you feel a little more danger in this sequel compared to Indy. Still THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR isn't without it's problems. You don't feel the danger of the Dragon Emoperor as you did with Vosloo's mummy. Plus this sequel shifts more in action-adventure territory and leaves the horror out of the film (which I didn't mind not being there). Then the trailer for the film spills most of the plot. So You can go see the sequel if you have nothing better to do or wait for the DVD.
